Only a little more then a week away, and down to the last 2 stages. These are not my most favorite stages ... they usually host acts that are fairly popular - which is great - but what I look forward to at bluesfest is finding new acts in an intimate setting. Of course, with the acts listed below in addition to the likes of Santana, Rush, Moody Blues, Matthew Good, Arcade Fire, Iron Maiden and Weezer, the main stage(s) will be packed powder-kegs of energy ... something to check out, if you're so inclined.
More music? Picks for the Black Sheep stage can be found here and picks for the Hard Rock stage here.
Here's what's making my radar for the top 5 on the MBNA and Claridge stages:
MBNA STAGE
Silver Creek: After seeing Mumford and Sons in a 200 person venue a few months ago, seeing Silver Creek play at Kaffe 1870 is perhaps the biggest musical highlight of the last 6 months. These guys are solid, solid southern-rock musicians.
Metric: I've seen 'em before and have been disappointed, but I heart Metric. I'll fight the crowds to dance and yell along with 1000's of others - sometimes big crowds are exactly what you need.
Flaming Lips: Pure entertainment, guaranteed. This should be a wild show....
Great Big Sea: Another happy dance party!
Old Crow Medicine Show: I don't know much about these guys, other then John's band covers the song in the video below and that video makes me want to see more.
CLARIDGE STAGE
Gipsy Kings: Call it nostalgia. I haven't seen these guys in a long time and I'm looking forward to hearing a few old favorites ... and dancing ... preferably in the rain.
Sarah Harmer: I'm a fan of Sarah's. I especially like the stories in her lyrics, how she succinctly describes Ontario's landscape and her amazing ability to simply capture complex emotions. Lyrics like '...does it matter what I remember might be my own imagination painting scenes more pretty...' from the song in the video below.
Good music to watch an Ottawa sunset over the river.
Martin Sexton: A great singer/songwriter. I've never seen him live, and am really looking forward to it.
Steve Winwood: Another trip down memory lane. I'm gonna check it out just to hear that Hammond fire up.
Kings go Forth: 10-piece soul/funk band. Sounds fun!
... Also, Jimmy Cliff and Caravan Palace
