I'm smitten with Hey Rosetta!
I liked them fine before seeing them perform live, but once you're dancing to a cello, fiddle, horns, and some of the most complex drumming I've heard ... and once you see the smiles on their faces, still shocked and humbled by their growing popularity, while the crowd sings louder then their amplified voices ... well, you'll be smitten, too. (they are about to start a fall tour, fyi - I see Ottawa, Vancouver, Montreal, and San Francisco dates!)
I've seen Hey Rosetta! a couple of times now, and I have a great story about their show at Bluesfest - easily one of the best-vibed crowds I've ever participated in - torrential rainstorm, wild dancing, and all. But I'll save that for another post.
I was running along a country road last night and listening to Hey Rosetta! for a little added energy when their song, Psalm came on. Not their usual high-energy feel, but it fit my mood perfectly so I let it play. I walked a little and kept listening - such lovely, lovely lyrics. A piano and horns. That's it, simple. Touching.
I must have skipped past this song dozens of times, and now I kept putting it on repeat.
Its funny how that happens, isn't it - things you ignore or dismiss that can turn out to be important and meaningful later on?
Psalm
but often it happens you know
that the things you don’t trust are the ones you need most
so it's cautiously into the dark
but you see before long that your eyes will adjust
and under the night you can hear
the full moon rise like a psalm in the air
and the air goes into your lungs
and around in your heart and on through your blood
it goes cautiously into the dark
and you see before long that we all have a part
and under your skin you can feel
that the fear that you feel is what will set you free
and under the night you can hear
the full moon rise like a psalm in the air
and the air goes into your lungs
